Business School Applicants Must Submit PowerPoint Slide Show
Wednesday January 16, 2008
The University of Chicago business school recently announced a new and unprecedented admissions requirement. Students who apply to the school are now being asked to submit a four-page PowerPoint slide presentation as part of their application.
Rose Martinelli, associate dean for student recruitment and admissions, says the new requirement will allow students to showcase a creative side that cannot always be exhibited through essays, recommendations, and test scores.
The slides can include everything from poetry to art; hyperlinks and videos are prohibited. Since the school plans to judge slides based on creativity versus technical quality, Chicago applicants might want to think about creating the kind of presentation that can’t be found in a boardroom meeting.

While University of Chicago is the first school to require a 4 page Presentation from all applicants, for years HEC has required all of those it interviews, to make a 10 minute presentation. PR at GSB did a great job of making their requirement appear unique, but if you get into the details of the question, it really is not that unique. Applicants have always had the option to make such a presentation to NYU Stern when answering NYU’s question three. Additionally the limitations on what Chicago will allow to be submitted make this simply an alternative format essay for addressing the question, “Who are you?” This essay is not a test of presentation skills as is very clear from the instructions provided as well as by comments made by GSB admissions. The link above is to my extensive analysis of this question.
