Interview with Rasmussen College School of Business

By , About.com Guide

Rasmussen College School of Business awards associate, bachelor degrees, and master degrees through online and on-campus programs. To learn more about the admissions process at Rasmussen College, I spoke to Kathy Heldman, the Director of the School of Business at Rasmussen College. Here's what she had to say:

Can you provide a general overview of the Rasmussen admissions process?

The student experience at Rasmussen College is a top priority. Students receive outstanding support online and on campus from the first day they call or visit Rasmussen College until after they graduate and are working in their career. This all begins with the Rasmussen College Admissions Representative. Admissions Representatives work with prospective students personally to help future students determine what career field will suit them best, and they will give them the tools to create and plan for a bright future. Students who choose to attend Rasmussen College online or on campus must submit an application. They are also required to take a computerized entrance examination to help determine if foundation courses in English and Math are required. Rasmussen College does not require ACT or SAT scores. Students also work one on one with a Financial Aid Planner to determine the best way to fund their education.

At the Rasmussen College School of Business, students can choose from Bachelor’s and Associate’s degrees offered online or at one of our 17 campuses across the nation. Programs in the School of Business include Entrepreneurship, Management, Human Resources, Accounting, Internet Marketing, and more. Rasmussen College is also proud to have just announced an opportunity for students to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Rasmussen College and an online M.B.A. from Benedictine University in as little as five years. This is an excellent choice for someone who aspires to be a leader in business.

Is it better to apply early in the process?

One great thing about Rasmussen College is that classes start eight times every year. Students interested in the Rasmussen College School of Business can apply anytime throughout the year for admission.

Do you interview students before making a decision?

Students consult with Admissions Representatives during the application process to determine which program of study is right for them, what their career and life goals are, and in what way Rasmussen College can provide the most value to that student. Admissions Representatives work with students through a student’s entire time at the college to make sure they have the support services and tools they need to succeed and achieve their goals. If a student chooses to take classes online, the process is the same except they are corresponding through email and phone.

Do you require ACT or SAT scores for admission?

Rasmussen College does not require ACT or SAT scores for admission. Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

How important is an applicant's GPA?

An applicant’s GPA or transcripts can demonstrate academic strengths and challenges, which can help to determine program of study and learning needs. GPA does not affect acceptance into Rasmussen College.

Do race, ethnicity, sex, and cultural background play much of a role in Rasmussen admission decisions?

Rasmussen College embraces diversity and believes that diversity in the classroom leads to diversity of thought, which is integral to the learning process.

What is the most common mistake that Rasmussen applicants make?

The most common mistake that any person interested in college can make is understating the value of education. Data from multiple sources, including the U.S. Department of Labor shows that people with college degrees are much more likely to be employed and to make a higher salary than those without a college degree. In fact, someone with a Bachelor’s degree can make almost $1 million dollars more in their lifetime than someone without a college degree, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Rasmussen College understands that students choose Rasmussen because they want a better career, and Rasmussen College helps them to achieve those goals by providing a Career Placement team that actually helps students find careers in their field upon graduation.

How can a Rasmussen applicant stand out among their peers?

Rasmussen College has a saying: “Either become a Rasmussen College graduate, or compete with one.” This isn’t just a catchy saying though; it conveys the truths of what being a Rasmussen College graduate is all about. The program offerings at Rasmussen College are in the most in-demand and growing fields, putting graduates at the forefront of the market. The curriculum and the faculty at Rasmussen College give students the theoretical knowledge coupled with the practical skills necessary to enhance the student’s ability in the workforce. Also, the Career Placement team at Rasmussen College works one-on-one with students to help them to find a career in their field when they graduate. Students choose Rasmussen College because they know that they will be more competitive in the job market when they graduate.

Why does Rasmussen stand out among other business schools?

Rasmussen College is leader in online education and in helping its students to find rewarding careers upon graduation. In July 2009, 98% of Rasmussen College graduates from the previous year were employed. The Rasmussen College School of Business placed 92% of its graduates in careers in their field during that year. Rasmussen College is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, students may be able to transfer credits more easily. Acceptance of credits is always up to the receiving institution. Also, some employers will only offer tuition reimbursement to employees attending a regionally accredited college. With the flexibility of online degrees, the value of the Career Placement team, outstanding student support services, and the high standards of academic integrity, Rasmussen College goes above and beyond to help its students succeed.
