Car Shopping – Tips for Car Buyers

Considerations Before You Buy

By Karen Schweitzer, About.com

  • Decisions – Decide what you are looking for in an automobile – the options, body trim, color, etc.
  • Information – Use the Internet to research not only the vehicle you are looking at but also the dealership you might be going to.
  • Buy or Lease – It might be better for you to lease a vehicle depending on your driving habits. Get the information and make an informed decision.
  • Get Pre-Approved – Some find this to be the easiest way to purchase a vehicle. This way you know exactly what you can afford.
  • The Salesperson – Every salesperson is there to make money, they are looking out for their commission not your best interest.
  • Maintenance Costs – Those performance tires look great but are you going to have to get a loan to replace them when they wear out? Most cars come with factory recommended tires that are right for that car. Lower quality tires can have a drastic effect on the handling of a vehicle.
  • Insurance – Contact your insurance agent before you buy. That sports car looks great, but if the insurance is too costly you might not be able to afford fuel for it.
  • Fuel Economy – Look at the sticker on the window; it will give you an idea of the fuel economy of the vehicle you are looking at. If you buy a vehicle that only uses premium fuel it will cost you more to fill-up than a vehicle that runs on lower grade fuel.
  • Impulse Buying – Don't buy a car just because you like the color. The vehicle needs to be practical for you.
  • Take Your Time – Buying a vehicle is a big purchase that needs lots of thought and calculating. Make sure everything is just right before you sign on the dotted line. If you have any questions be sure to ask. When you drive your new car off the dealers lot the value drops by thousands of dollars.
