Choosing a Business School

Things to Think About Before You Apply

By , About.com Guide

Choosing a business school is a very important decision. Your choice will affect your career and your future.

When choosing a business school, there are many things think about before applying. Here is a list that will help keep you focused:

The Degree

Does the school offer the type of degree and program that you want? Nowadays there are many different options. You can now choose from two-year MBA programs, one-year MBA programs, Executive MBA programs, part-time MBA programs, and distance education MBA programs.

The Cost

Business school tuition can be very costly and should be carefully considered before applying. Decide how much you are prepared to pay for your education and look into schools that fit into the financial parameter that you set. Keep in mind other expenses for the area such as cost of living and commuting.

The Curriculum

Many schools are now discouraging specializing in only one aspect of business. A general management perspective has been adopted as a result. However, concentration should still be considered. For example, if you are interested in marketing, choose a school that has an outstanding marketing program.

The Size

Assess your preferences. Are you interested in individualized attention? If so, it may be better for you to choose a school with small class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio.

The Reputation

Much like a law school or medical school education, the academic content of a business school education does not vary much between programs. However, the MBA is analyzed and ranked by more organizations than any other academic degree. These ranking can help you determine which schools are the most prestigious. Keep in mind though, even if a school is not top-ranked, it can still have a good reputation.

The Exclusiveness

Some business schools are very selective. They may only admit a small number of students into their program, making the application process very competitive. To help assess your chances, match your background (GPA, test scores, etc.) with the school’s admittance record. If you have doubts about your chances of acceptance, remember that you can apply to more than one school.

The Placement Statistics

Students usually pursue an MBA to enhance their future career options. Therefore, choosing a school with a good placement record is important. Most business schools will willingly supply placement statistics to interested applicants. Checking recruiter records and speaking with former graduates of the school will also give you further insight.
