Types of Management Degrees

There are four basic types of management degrees. Each degree takes a different amount of time to complete. Some degrees may not be available at all schools. They include:
  • Associate's Degree - An associate's degree can be earned from a 2-year college, a 4-year college or university, or a business school. Most associate's programs in management take two years to complete. Curriculum generally includes instruction in general education topics, such as English, math, and science, in addition to courses in business, finance, communications, and leadership.
  • Bachelor's Degree - Like an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree in an undergraduate degree. Bachelor's degrees in management can be earned from any 4-year college or university. Some business schools also offer bachelor's degree programs. Curriculum includes general education courses as well as comprehensive instruction in management, leadership, business operations, and related topics.
  • Master's Degree - A master's degree in management can be earned from colleges, universities, and business schools that offer graduate programs. One of the most popular master's degrees is an MBA in management. The average master's degree program takes two years to complete, but there are some programs that can be completed in as little as 11-18 months. A master's degree program in management generally consists of intensive study. Students will explore many different management topics and may be required to complete an internship to earn their degree.
  • Doctorate Degree - A doctorate degree is the highest academic degree that can be earned. Not every school offers this degree. However, there are many U.S. universities and business schools that do provide doctorate programs in management. These programs often focus on research, though there are some programs that are geared toward students interested in a professional doctorate degree.

There are many different career levels in the management field. You may work as an assistant manager. In this job, you will assist one or more other managers. You may be assigned a number of duties and will most certainly be responsible for overseeing other people. You can also work as a mid-level manager. In this position, you will report to one or more executive managers and will most likely have an assistant manager to help you complete your duties. Mid-level managers typically supervise more people than assistant managers. The highest level of management is executive management. Executive managers are usually charged with supervising all of the employees within a business. They are also responsible for supervising business operations.

A number of job titles exist within these three management levels. Job titles are usually related to a manager's responsibility. For example, a manager that oversees people and human resources is known as a human resources manager. An accounting manager would be responsible for accounting operations, and a production manager would be responsible for production operations.
