How to Research an Online Business Degree Program

By , About.com Guide

Researching an online business degree program is just like researching any other education program. You must first learn more about the program and the school that offers it. You should also check to make sure that the program is accredited and speak with current or former students. The following steps will guide you through the process.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 4-6 hours

Here's How:

  1. Visit the school's website. The school's website will provide detailed information about the school's business degree program. Things to take note of include the length of the program, the types of courses offered through the program, the course delivery method, and the cost of the program. You may also be able to find information about the professors who participate in the program and the students who currently attend the school.
  2. Check the school's accreditation. Attending an accredited online business degree program is a must. Accreditation ensures that you will receive a quality education. It also makes you eligible for financial aid and increases your chances of getting a job after graduation. You may be able to find accreditation information on the school's site. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs and search out accreditation information for the business degree program you are interested in.
  3. Ask about graduation and placement rates. Although there are some schools that provide information about their program's graduation and placement rates, most do not. You will have to contact the school directly to ask for rates. Start by asking about graduation rates so that you can get an idea of how many students actually complete the program. The median graduation rate at for-profit schools (most online schools are for-profit schools) is 38 percent. You should also ask about career placement rates. This information will let you know how good your chances are of getting a job after graduating from the program.
  4. Speak with current and former students. This is a great way to learn more about an online business degree program. Students will be able to give you insider information that can't be found on a school's website. Some of the things you can ask current students about include the professors, the amount of communication that occurs between students, and the quality of the curriculum. If you are speaking to former students, you should ask whether or not they completed the program, how long it took to get a job after graduation, and the amount of support they received from the school staff during and after the program.
  5. Seek out reviews and comments about the school online. The internet is an excellent place to conduct research. Use Google to search for reviews or comments that have been made in online forums. If you can't find what you are looking for, reach out to the online community via blogs, forums, or social networking sites.
  6. You should always make comparisons between the online degree program you are researching and other online degree programs before making a final decision. Things that should be compared include the curriculum, course delivery methods, graduation rates, and program costs. By the time you are finished, you should be able to clearly state why one program is better than another.
