Stafford Loans Using Stafford Loans to Pay for School

The Ins and Outs of Stafford Loans

By Karen Schweitzer, About.com

Stafford Loans are guaranteed and subsidized by the federal government. If you need a student loan to pay for college or graduate school, Stafford Loans are worth checking into.

Who is Eligible for Stafford Loans?
Not everyone is eligible for Stafford Loans. These loans are need-based loans awarded to students through a school's financial aid package.

Stafford Loan Interest
The interest rate on Stafford Loans is relatively low. The rate is typically variable and has a cap, which prevents the rate from getting too high. You are not required to pay any interest while you are in school. You also get a break the first six months after graduation.

Paying Back a Stafford Loan
You can take up to ten years to pay back Stafford Loans. There is no penalty for early payment and loans can be consolidated if affordability becomes an issue.
